I’m a children’s nurse and potty learning expert, offering gentle, child-centred and evidence-based guidance to make potty training playful, practical, and tailored to your unique child’s needs and temperament. I advocate for parents and caregivers of potty learning babies and toilet training toddlers by highlighting harmful misinformation in the mainstream. I’m a published author, podcaster and create content to make the science of potty training accessible.

After more than a decade of advocating for evidence-based, child-centred potty learning, it’s genuinely exciting to see the new government-backed guidance finally reflect this approach at a national level. The approach underpinning this guidance originates from the 3-step method I developed and shared with ERIC in 2021 as part of professional collaboration and evidence development, so families and professionals who already follow this work will recognise much of the structure and thinking immediately. This moment represents an important cultural shift towards earlier, skills-based potty learning, supporting children’s long-term health, independence and environmental stability. I’m delighted to see this change finally happening and am proud to have played a meaningful role in shaping the direction of travel for potty learning in the UK.

My vision is for every child to begin playful, practical potty learning alongside nappy use from early infancy, ensuring a smooth, skills-based transition to being nappy-free by age three. Potty learning will be tailored to each child’s unique developmental needs, supported by accessible, clinically-informed guidance. This approach benefits all children, including those with developmental differences or neurodivergence, and supports optimal bladder and bowel health. By empowering families with evidence-based advice, I aim to reduce the environmental impact of disposable nappies and see fewer children starting school with toileting difficulties.
